Who Are We

    Luke 5:30-32 - But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with such scum?”  Jesus answered them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”

     The Pharisees could not believe what they were seeing. Jesus ate meals with cheating tax collectors. He visited the homes of prostitutes. He touched the lepers. He constantly surrounded himself with sinners. But why? The Pharisees and so called righteous religious leaders considered these people scum, unworthy and not deserving of the breathes they took.

     But this is not how Jesus saw these people. He saw a heart that was breaking. He saw a soul that needed cleansing. He saw a brother and sister that needed healing. He saw a life worth saving even though it would cost him his own life. Jesus said that the healthy are not in need of a doctor, but the sick are. He came to earth as a Savior to the sinners, the lost. He came for the sinners not the saints. He had uneducated fishermen and despised tax collectors as his disciples. He called a traitor, friend. He came for the outcasts, thieves, murderers, prostitutes, homeless, the morally bankrupt, the sick, the unrighteous. He loved them as much as he did the righteous. He wasn't looking at the outside or actions, but rather their hearts.

     The difference in then and now is that Jesus doesn't walk this earth anymore. But he has told us that WE are now his body, his hands and feet. Jesus lives within us. It's our task, our duty to reach out these. To touch the man with unspeakable perversions. To reach out to the drug addicts and prostitutes. To find the homeless. To bring into the fold the outcasts. To offer hope to the hopeless.

     Do we do this today? Have we answered the call? Have we picked up where Jesus left off? Have we accepted the great commission? I don't see it. Myself included. We go to our church services and raise our hands to our modern praise and worship music and listen to our pastors preach for 45 minutes. Then we walk out the doors and go back to our normal lives. We are so quick to judge the very ones that need us the most. We place ourselves in his high position of moral judge. Jesus doesn't remember your past. Once he forgives you, it's over. You start with a clean slate. A new creature in Christ. He said that he casts your sins into the Sea of Forgetfulness. As far as the east is from the west.

     So who are we to judge anyone. He told us to reach out to these and offer them the gift of eternal life. Who are we to bring up past mistakes and failures. If Jesus doesn't remember them then why are they all that we see. Who are we to label people based on their past sins. Those that Jesus sets free are free regardless of what we think. How dare we put ourselves in his role as Almighty Judge. How dare we put ourselves above him. How dare we hold past sins against those that he has forgiven. How dare we hold past mistakes against those when he has already erased them and given them a new future... "Who Are We?"

    Matthew 7:1-5 MSG -"Don't pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults unless, of course, you want the same treatment. That critical spirit has a way of boomeranging. It's easy to see a smudge on your neighbor's face and be oblivious to the ugly sneer on your own. Do you have the nerve to say, 'Let me wash your face for you,' when your own face is distorted by contempt? It's this whole traveling road-show mentality all over again, playing a holier-than-thou part instead of just living your part. Wipe that ugly sneer off your own face, and you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbor."

If

    Psalm 32:5 - Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the LORD.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.

     IF we confess our sins... Perhaps the biggest word in the Bible just might be this little two letter word... IF. For confessing sins, admitting failure or taking responsibility for mistakes is exactly what prideful people refuse to do.

     "Me, a sinner? Sure I get a little rowdy sometimes but I'm still a pretty good ol' boy." "I'm just as good as the next guy." Justification, rationalization or comparison, they sound good. They sound familiar. They even sound American, but in the kingdom of God, they sound hollow.

     When you get to the point of sorrow for your sins, when you admit that you have no other option, that is when you can cast all your cares on him for he is waiting. He is waiting on you..."If".

Until Tomorrow

    1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 - And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.

     Today we lay to rest my uncle Rudy Roper. Uncle Rudy was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend but most of all a great man. I honestly can't remember seeing him without a smile. And his smile was contagious. Uncle Rudy had an effect on every life he came in contact with. Our current society just doesn't produce many men like him anymore. The world has truly lost one of the "good ones".

     Now don't get me wrong, I've shed my share of tears over the past couple days but I find myself happy this morning. I'm happy that uncle Rudy has received his eternal reward. I'm happy that he no longer has any pain or sickness. I'm happy that he is reunited with my PaPa and uncle Jim (his brothers). I'm happy for all the great memories I have. I'm happy that I had the awesome pleasure of being a part of his life. And most importantly, I'm happy that God has promised that today is not good bye. We will meet again one day in Heaven. I love you uncle Rudy..."Until Tomorrow".

It Ain't Over, Til It's Over

    Isaiah 55:8-11 - “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. “The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.

     When God doesn't do what we think he should, when we think he should, it's not easy. It never has been. It never will be. But faith is the conviction that God knows more than we do about this life and he WILL get us through it. Disappointment is caused by unmet expectations. So the cure to disappointment is to revamp our expectations.

     Next time you find yourself disappointed by God's timing or answer, don't panic. Don't give up. Just be patient and let God remind you that HE IS still in control. "It Ain't Over, Til It's Over".

Our Shepherd

    Psalm 23:1-3 - The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.

     Sheep aren't very smart. They will walk into running water without a second thought. Then their wool becomes heavy and they sink and drown. They need a shepherd to lead them to the calm streams. Sheep have no natural defenses. No claws or fangs. No loud roars or large horns. They need a shepherd with his rod or staff to protect them from their enemies. Sheep have no sense of direction. They will wonder aimlessly without purpose. They need a shepherd to lead them down the right path.

     We as Christians need a shepherd too. We tend to be swept away by the rushing waters of life. We ourselves are defenseless against the evil lion that prowls ready to devour us daily. We walk around in life without purpose or direction. Thankfully we too have a shepherd to lead us, protect us and direct our paths. Jesus is our shepherd and he is ready to care for us and guide us. Look to him. Be led by... "Our Shepherd".

A Prayer For Our Nation

Heavenly Father,
We come before You today to ask Your forgiveness and seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe on those who call evil good," but that's exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values.
We confess that:
We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it pluralism;
We have worshiped other gods and called it multi-culturalism;
We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle;
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery;
We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation;
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare;
We have killed our unborn and called it choice;
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable;
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem;
We have abused power and called it political savvy;
We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition;
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression;
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, O God, and know our hearts today; try us and see if there be some wicked way in us; cleanse us from every sin and set us free.
Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of the United States of America, and who have been ordained by You, to govern this great Nation.
Grant them Your wisdom to rule and may their decisions direct us to the center of Your will. I ask it in the name of Your Son, the Living Savior, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Jesus, My Refuge

    Psalm 91:1-16 - Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished. If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! The LORD says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

Brothers

    Philemon 1:7 - Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.

     I am so blessed that God has given me such a wonderful brother. My brother has stood with me through my weakest hours and has never left my side. I can't honestly say whether or not I'd be here today if it were not for his love, understanding, wisdom and strength. But just as my blood brother has been my rock through these recent storms, so does the Bible tell us to support our Christian siblings. Never to tear down, but rather build each other up through the love of Jesus Christ.

     I wanted to tell my brother Michael how much he means to me and that I could never express the gratitude I have for all he has done for me.

More than the blood of my blood,
he is my rock, my friend...my brother.

Brother, in times of need, never judging
always there.

My brother could, would, always make
things right.

Brother, never made much ado about the
task at hand...he just did it.

Brother, who lifted me, when I was down.

Brother, who brought the laughter amid the pain.

Brother, the word he never spoke...was "no".

Brother, who had the answers, to my questions.

Brother, who by example, did walk the path of right.

Brother, in all my years...in all my life, never have I met
another...like my loving brother.

The Light Of The World

    John 8:12 - Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

     It doesn't take long to realize the importance of a lit path at 2:00am when on your way to the bathroom, you stump your toe on the corner of the dresser. Our life is basically the same. We try to stumble our way through the darkness to reach our goals instead of turning to God for guidance. As humans, we always want to do things ourselves. After all, we're grown adults. We can handle this. Right?

     Well I don't know about you but I need God's direction. I'm tired of falling flat on my face in the dark. God stands right beside us as an eternal flame to light our path and every step we take toward the goals he wants us to achieve. Why would we want to blindly open doors looking for answers when God stands waiting to lead us to the right one. We must turn away from our flesh and look to God. He is ... "The Light Of The World".

Rest

       2 Thessalonians 1:6-7 - In his justice he will pay back those who persecute you.  And God will provide rest for you who are being persecuted

     Rest is defined as the cessation of an activity or quiet relaxation. In these days and times, who couldn't use some rest? Sometimes we try so hard to fix problems within our lives that we become so entangled in the issue that we lose sight of God. It's like the saying, "You can't see the forest for all the trees". You begin to focus on the problem rather than the solution.

     All God wants is for us to look to him for the answer. God has promised us rest in the middle of the storms of our lives. He will answer our prayers and solve our problems if we will only let him. He wants to give us rest and to renew our strength. Resting in times of trouble doesn't mean that we've given up but rather that we've realized that the trouble is bigger than us. It means we know that it is not bigger than our God and it is time to step aside and let God be God. Through every struggle, God is standing beside you ready to meet your every need according to His will and to give you ... "Rest".
